It is my privilege to be present and be part of your pregnancy, birth journey and beyond.

Mostly, our normal response and state calm (the parasympathetic state).  This is because we are mostly feeling confident and relaxed.  This is the state we are mostly in because we are not mostly in an emergency. We produce the hormone oxytocin when we are in this state.

We cannot be in the parasympathetic state when we are in the sympathetic state.  Oxytocin is known also as the hormone of calmness and cooperation (Kerstin Uvnas-Moberg) and hormone of love (Michel Odent).

You will fully understand:

  • that birth works the majority of times when physiology in not interrupted

  • that on the few occasions when nature does truly get things wrong, you can still emerge physically safe and mentally well and strong

  • that you have a voice and a say how your care is delivered

  • that you have bodily autonomy (no tests or procedures should be performed without your expressed consent)

You absolutely don't have to be fearful, labour can absolutely be comfortable.  It's just that you need to re-train your subconscious to let go of all the negatives you have learned about birth, from youth, from friends and relatives and exaggerated TV and other media contents. Everyone is capable of learning to re-train learned behaviour or thoughts, its just a matter of putting in the work, to find out and know your rights, to learn that you can and know how to use your voice.  Using affirmation and other Hypnobirthing tools you will regain your power and loose your fear about birth.

Your partner who may otherwise be side lined and likely to feel like a spare part during labour will be equipped to know how important their role is in continuity of your care, as your advocate, as your safeguard and your No 1 support.  Essentially, they learn how to hold your space.

When you are not broken after birth you can then start motherhood without doubting your ability in yourself as a woman and a mother.

The tools gained in hypnobirthing can be applied during any stressful situation including antenatal appointments and consultations, parenting, work and close relationships.  Importantly, you are able to move through pregnancy to birth without being frightened.  When a baby is nurtured in-utero, birthed into and again nurtured earth side in a state of empowerment and calm, this spills over into his/her whole life and the relationships they form.

Hypnobirthing is high level antenatal education, which supports you to become more empowered and with clarity, good and current information, you are truly partner in decision making in your care.  After all this is what WHO, NICE and all advisory bodies agreed that you should be.

The Science behind it

The freeze-flight-fight response system (the sympathetic state) is a brilliant lifesaving system which has evolved over many millennia. It is how we are designed to respond to fear in case of emergency and it has served us well.

Catecholamines hormones come into play when we are in the sympathetic state, particularly adrenaline.   Adrenaline causes the heart to start to thump and  pump blood around the body faster, in case there is need to run or fight.  It also causes all the energy resources to go first to the essential organs and then to arm and legs, ready to run or fight.  When a birther/woman is frightened during childbirth, the sympathetic reaction is however useless because they are unable to run or fight.

During labour the part of the system most expressed is freeze, because the birther is not going to be fighting or running.  It can cause labour to stop, even minor stress or disturbance can cause the body to freeze or slow down in labour.  This can be expressed in the reversal of dilatation and or failure of labour progress.

Mostly, our normal response and state is calm (this is the parasympathetic state).  This is because we are mostly feeling confident and relaxed.  This is the state we are mostly in because we are not normally in an emergency. We produce the hormone oxytocin when we are in the parasympathetic state.

We cannot be in the parasympathetic state when we are in the sympathetic state.  Oxytocin is known also as the hormone of calmness and cooperation (Kerstin Uvnas-Moberg) and hormone of love (Michel Odent).

When you learn and practice hypnobirthing, you are able to remain in the parasympathetic state, this is why hypnobirthing works to  make birth comfortable and not frightening.  Whether you planned and achieved a normal birth, or achieved a ceasarian section (CS) or whether you planned a CS and achieved a CS or a normal birth, hypnobirthing works.
